Shangri-La II's Memorial Day Madness
Set As One-Day Show, Sunday, May 30
Adjustments Made to Accommodate Area Tracks
Track PR Report
Officials of Shangri-La II Motor Speedway have announced that the Memorial Day Madness event next weekend has been consolidated into a one-day, five-class program on Sunday, May 30. Originally a two-day event was envisioned at the ASA Member Track, but the heavy racing schedule around the region on the first holiday weekend of the season meant the change was in the interest of all parties.
"We've all had our share of weather issues in May, and Shangri-La II has been more fortunate than most tracks," said track manager Amy Stilson. "We owe it to our fans, our race teams, and our sponsors to present the best possible product, and we saw that a Sunday-only event was the best way to achieve that," she added.
Modifieds, ASA Late Models, Sportsman Modifieds, and Street Stocks will be joined by the INEX Legends, with double points for regular distance in the four weekly divisions. Owego's Tony Hanbury will seek his fourth consecutive Sportsman Modified win and Travis Fisher is looking for the hat trick in the ASA Late Models after winning the last two weeks. Chad McDonald is also on a two-race run in the Street Stocks.
In the headline Modified division, Brian Defebo and Rick Zacharias have split the first two point races of 2010, with new contenders emerging including local drivers Dean Rypkema of Owego and Scott Conover of Brooktondale, both top five finishers last week. Perhaps the most fascinating story to come out of the early weeks of the new season is the "iron man" schedule being attempted by Jimmy Zacharias, who is competing in three divisions weekly and is a contender to win in all three.
Pit gates open on Sunday, May 30 at 12 noon with grandstands at 12:45 p.m. Practice starts at 1:00 p.m., with the green flag on the first heat at 3:00 p.m. For more information, visit shangrila-2.com or call 607-330-2622.
