GMP Improves Safety With 'Bubba Barriers'
Changes Made After World Crown Wreck
Track PR Report
In an effort to make Gresham Motorsports Park safer for its competitors, the Jefferson, GA track has purchased more than 70 flat-sided barriers for its inside front-stretch retaining wall. The portable barriers replace the sculptured inside retaining wall barriers used at the 2009 World Crown 300 - track’s first event last season after an extensive full-facility renovation.

The new retaining structures were quickly dubbed ‘Bubba Barriers’ by GMP track workers in honor of racer Bubba Pollard, who’s car rolled over after colliding with the wall during the 300-lap World Crown headline event.

“We looked for the flat sided barriers before we opened with the World Crown last year,” said Dan Elliott, General Manager of Gresham Motorsports Park. “We found out that the last two states that had been using them were Florida and Pennsylvania and they stopped using them in 2007. It took us until February of this year to find any companies that still had the forms for them. We had the new barriers we purchased modified. They are higher, reinforced and have connectors on the end – all so we could make our track safer for our competitors.

“Additionally, we took the barriers we were using for the front stretch wall and moved those back to protect the crews on pit road,” Elliott continued.  “That’s going to be a big safety plus and protect our competitors who working in that potentially dangerous area as well.”

The new inside retaining wall is just one part of the continuing renovation of GMP - the former Peach State Speedway.  The track underwent a multi-million dollar facelift in 2009 with a new half-mile racing surface, the addition of a quarter-mile oval, an infield technical center, new grandstands, restrooms, concessions, lighting and public address system.

Also added to the GMP facility this off-season is the ‘Refueling Station,’ a raised outdoor pavilion in Turn 4 that will sell adult refreshments.
