We've all heard the saying, "how much wood could a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood?" Well in the ASA OREGON Midwest Truck Tour a new saying is being born. "How many races will a Wood brother win, if a Wood brother gets behind the wheel?" John Wood set the pace this past Tuesday night at Wisconsin International Raceway in Kaukauna, WI. Wood set a new track record and had the field covered capturing his third victory of the season, and making the Wood brothers five for five in 2010.
John Wood had never raced at WIR in any division prior to Tuesday night's event. The track known for its odd D-shape is normally a track that takes several visits to get a feel for. "I kind of took a liking to this place. It's kind of weird, so it matches me pretty well," joked the eventual winner. Even though he was able to knock off a new track record in qualifying he knew that he was going to have his work cut out for him. "Rick Corso has one of my old trucks and he has a lot of experience. I'll have to earn every position I get. I'll have to hustle but I'll also have to be really be careful," added Wood.
Twelve trucks started the feature event with Gary McDonald and Tim Hagen leading the field to the green flag. On the first lap, the #52 of Kyle Brinkmann took a wild ride on the backstretch. The young driver went airborne, flipping in the air twice before rolling over once on the ground. Brinkmann was able to walk away from the incident unscathed which is proof that the safety measures in racing are doing their job.
As the trucks went back to green, the #12, #88, and #74 spun in turns three and four bringing out another caution. With ten trucks still remaining on the track, the trucks were finally underway once again for the 30-lap feature event. As Camden Murphy and Tom McClintock battled for the lead, the Wood brothers were making their way to the front. With nine laps to go, McClintock took the lead, only to fall out of the event five laps before the finish.
With McClintock off the pace, the Wood brothers continued to make their way to the front. John took the lead from the #85 of Camden Murphy and brother Jerry followed suit. The Wood brothers have both finished in the top five in all truck events so far this season and one or the other has won each event. Rick Corso, Vincent Wilkenson, and Conrad Jorgenson rounded out the top five.
The next event for the ASA OREGON Midwest Truck Tour is Saturday, August 14th at Dells Raceway Park. Once again the Trucks will join the American Speed Association® Kwik Trip Midwest Tour presented by ECHO Outdoor Power Equipment and grandstay.net as well as the ASA Midwest Sportsman Tour.
