In addition to the American Speed Association® Kwik Trip Midwest Tour presented by ECHO Outdoor Power Equipment and grandstay.net, and the ASA OREGON Midwest Truck Tour, the ASA Midwest Sportsman Tour made its debut in Cedar Rapids, IA last Friday night at Hawkeye Downs Speedway.
Chris Marek took home his second win of the season, the first coming at Dells Raceway Park back in May. After qualifying in the top-spot, Marek started the 35-lap feature in the 10th position. Marek charged his way through the field grabbing the lead on lap 23, but it was no easy task. "This is a really great group of guys to race with. This was our first time to this track so I didn't really know what to expect. But the car was really good today," exclaimed Marek.
The #27 of Jay Kalbus was having a great run as well. When the #7 of Jack Paulson got sideways, Kalbus was able to take second position. However Paulson quickly took the spot back. "My car got loose at the end of the race, so I had to work hard for second position. This is a great track and I had a lot of fun racing tonight," said Paulson.
Mike Heelein was also making a hard-charge to the front and took advantage of the battle between Paulson and Kalbus. Heelein dove to the inside of Kalbus for third and was challenging Paulson for second but did not have enough time to make the pass. "These guys race really hard and for a sportsman class, they are very competitive'" added Heelein.
Several drivers were quick to recognize the ASAMT and what they have done for the Sportsman division. Heelein was a little unsure about how many races he was going to compete in, but after Friday night's race, he may have made up his mind. "I like what the ASAMT has done with the Sportsman division. It gives our cars a lot of respect for what they are. This division definitely has a future."
Race winner, Chris Marek also noted that the Sportsman division is just getting started and with great competition like what they have seen so far this season, it will definitely attract more Sportsman drivers. Marek also added, "This is a really great series and definitely has room to grow. It would be nice to see a few more cars join us."
The ASA Midwest Sportsman division will return to Elko Speedway on June 26th for a 40-lap feature, followed by the "Swiss Colony All-Star 40-lap" event in conjunction with the ASA Midwest Tour "Swiss Colony All-Star Challenge 100" featuring Matt Kenseth, Tony Stewart, and Kelly Bires, at Madison International Speedway on Tuesday, June 29th.
