The ASA Midwest Sportsman Tour (ASAMST) is not going to be short on talent in the inaugural 2010 season. Three-time Pepsi State Champion, Jay Kalbus is looking forward to traveling to new tracks and adding to his over 50 career victories. "Traveling to other tracks all over the Mid-West is something I have wanted to do for a long time now. The ASAMST allows us to go to many new tracks, whereas before, local track rules did not allow us to go anywhere else. The ASAMST has done a great job getting all these tracks to come together on rules and allowing us to compete on as equal of a playing field as possible," stated an enthusiastic Kalbus.
Kalbus has been racing stock cars, whether sportsman, hobby stocks or late models, for 12 years, eight of which have been full-time. In the six years he has been racing in the sportsman division, Kalbus added to his already impressive record. He has accumulated three season championships, one at Jefferson Speedway and two at Madison International Speedway. In addition, he has claimed 24 feature wins and has finished top five in the final point standings every year while behind the wheel of his sportsman car.
Tim Olson, President of the ASAMT and Steve Einhaus, Vice President of the ASAMT are confident of the talent the sportsman division will bring. Einhaus stated, "Jay will come out of the box strong, he's good, and it will show for sure. I have known Jay since my days at Madison and we are excited that he will be racing with the tour. He is capable of winning a Championship and has good equipment, but most of all he will be a leader for the series. Having people like Jay in the tour will be very important to our success".
In 2010, the goal of the driver of the 1977 Chevy Monte Carlo is to win as many races as he can and hope that his race-by-race success leads to the Championship. Kalbus is supported and assisted by his fiancée Deanna, who acts as crew chief, helps get the car ready before each race, and drives the truck and trailer to each event. Craig and his daughter, Theressa make up the rest of the crew. This small but mighty crew built the Chevy 602 Crate engine powered Sportsman car themselves without the funding of any sponsorship, due to the downturn in the economy.
