The last two weeks will long be remembered for Tiff Daniels. Fresh off her seventh place finish at the ASA Transcontinental Series Free State 500 at the Phakisa Freeway Circuit in Welkom, Free State, South Africa, Daniels returned to her full-time job as an engineer Earnhardt Ganassi Racing where exactly two weeks later, she is part of the team that won the 52nd Annual Daytona 500.
"What a great two weeks! First, the South Africa trip was fantastic. The Phakisa Freeway was a great track to drive, and I had a blast racing on my first mile-and-a-half," Daniels recalled. "We were fortunate to have a good race, overcoming some obstacles, including a flat RR tire and getting hit on pit road, to finish 7th in the #19 SnowTheRacehorse.com Toyota, with my car owner and teammate Marc Davis finishing 3rd in the January 31st race."
Daniels returned after an adventurous trip from South Africa to her job at Earnhardt Ganassi Racing where they started their 2010 season on a very high note.
"Now, exactly two weeks later, I can say that my organization just won the Daytona 500!" Daniels exclaimed within minutes after the checkered flag fell. "I have been an engineer at Earnhardt Ganassi Racing (formerly Chip Ganassi Racing) for 2 1/2 years, and during that time we have only won one Cup race (Juan Pablo Montoya at Infineon in 2007) prior to today, although the CGR/SabCo organization had several before I came on board. I definitely have to congratulate Jamie McMurray, Bono, and the whole #1 travel team for bringing home the win, it is definitely the new highlight of my engineering career at EGR!"
Daniels has not worked closely with McMurray yet but will be soon. She is already impressed with the new Daytona 500 Champion, "I have not had a chance to work with Jamie yet, although I have met him at the shop. However, I do know the team has really enjoyed working with him so far. He has a passion for the sport, wants to do whatever he can to be successful, and really understands the importance of getting to know the guys on his team and building up a good rapport with them. I'm sure Jamie will be in the shop at the beginning of this week, and I'm looking forward to working with him when I travel to our next test sessions in a few weeks!"
"It was great to have a talent like Tiff Daniels race with us in the Republic of South Africa in the Free State 500 event," Dennis Huth, ASA President said. "We would like to congratulate on her seventh-place finish and now being part of a Daytona 500 Championship team."
