Wordelman is Named as ASA Member Track National Champ
Utah Driver Hails From Rocky Mountain Raceways
Series PR Report
Back on September 11, 2010, he claimed the Maverik Modified championship at Rocky Mountain Raceways, an ASA Member Track in West Valley City, Utah.  That night he told the fans, "Winning the track championship feels pretty cool, I used to watch the Modifieds race and I always wanted to race with them."

While he realized one dream that night, Bryan Wordelman, the 27-year-old driver from North Salt Lake, Utah, just got a phone call where he was told that he is going to live another dream...actually two dreams.  He got the phone call from ASA President Dennis Huth today informing him that he is the 2010 Joe Gibbs Driven Racing Oil ASA Member Track National Champion and will get a tryout with Joe Gibbs Racing, a tour of the Joe Gibbs Racing shop, and a one-on-one meeting with JD Gibbs, President of Joe Gibbs Racing and possibly Joe Gibbs himself.

"Wow!  That is really awesome," Wordelman said when Dennis Huth, ASA President informed him.  "We knew it was close, we have been on pins and needles the last couple of days waiting.  This is really cool.  I never thought I would I make it that far."

It was the closest margin of victory to date for the National Championship.  Wordelman won it by a margin of 0.0028 over Dustin Rumley, the 2010 track champion at Ace Speedway in Elon, NC.  Clint LaFont of Thunderhill Raceway in Kyle, TX was third only 0.0324 behind.  Jeremy Miller of Madison International Speedway in Oregon, WI was fourth only 0.2122 behind while Corey Jankowski of Dells Raceway Park in Wisconsin Dells, WI rounded out the top five only 0.3367 behind.

Huth told Wordelman what the margin of victory was and he was surprised, "That is tight," he exclaimed.  "That is amazing.  That is really humbling.  We didn't expect this at all when we started the year.  We just had all of the right stuff including some luck on our side too."

In order for Wordelman to win the National Championship, he first had to secure the track championship in the ASA Maverik Modified division.  He secured that in early September by winning the championship by 137 points over Jason Aposhian.

He did collect one feature win this year, but that was after he claimed the season championship at RMR.  In the 14 events counted towards the National Championship, Wordelman had a very consistent season.  He had 10 top-five's and 12 top-ten finishes.  Of those top-fives, five were a second place finish.

Another contributing factor to his National Championship was that his average starting position was 14th with an average finish of 5th.

Wordelman wasn't sure how things would shake out for the National Championship as he was in a tough battle for fifth position on their final points night with one tough competitor, "I almost spun myself out trying to get around my father-in-law, Johnny Luttmer," Wordelman recalled.  "It really wasn't his fault, it was just one of those deals where I was close and thought I was there but wasn't quite there.  I tried everything not to hit him and just about hit him.  I almost spun out but still lost two spots.  I was really wondering if those two spots, as close as the National Championship was, was going to make a difference."

Wordelman will join Cary Stapp from Thunderhill Raceway in Kyle, TX and Tommy Cloce from Adirondack Speedway in Beaver Falls, NY as the third Joe Gibbs Driven Racing Oil ASA Member Track National Champion.

"I appreciate the opportunity that ASA is giving to their Member Tracks.  This is really cool for someone like myself as a local racer to get a shot like this," Wordelman said.

Joe Gibbs Racing Oil has also announced that they will provide five (5) free cases of oil to each of the top five finishers for the 2011 season.

"Congratulations to Bryan, his race team, and to Spencer Young and Doug Binstock at Rocky Mountain Raceways for winning the 2010 Joe Gibbs Driven Racing Oil ASA Member Track National Championship," Dennis Huth, ASA President said.  "This was the closest battle that we have had so far with the National Championship.  It created a lot of excitement within our ASA Member Tracks and short track racing nationally which makes it sweeter for Bryan and his crew.  We look forward to Bryan's tryout with Joe Gibbs Racing.  A special thanks to Joe Gibbs Racing and Joe Gibbs Driven Racing Oil for giving Bryan this great opportunity."

Stay tuned to asa-racing.com to find out when Wordelman will have his tryout.  ASA will also provide coverage of his tryout.

The goal of the ASA Short Track National Championship is to activate a measuring system which takes into account many variables - such as field size, inversion, wins and number of races in a season - and create a level playing field to determine who is the 'best-of-the-best' of the ASA Member Track Champions nationwide.  A driver must win their track championship first to be eligible for the National Championship.
