ASA Student Educational Series
Awards Over $100k in Scholarships
Graduating High School Students at Madison and Dells Benefit
ASA PR Report

The ASA - Student Educational Series in partnership with Ohio Technical College in Cleveland, OH recently award 15 students with $150,000 in scholarships to the 2009 School of the Year.  Recently graduated high school students participated in the program at two ASA Member Tracks, Madison International Speedway in Oregon WI and Dells Raceway Park in Wisconsin Dells, WI.

The students spent this summer participating on a race team that competes weekly at Madison International Speedway or at Dells Raceway Park. Some participated as a driver and some were part of a pit crew. Along with the team performance on the track, students also had to keep a log book of what they were doing throughout the summer and submit an essay at the beginning of what they hoped to gain and another essay at the end reviewing what they learned from the experience.

Larry Pond, National Director of the ASA - Student Educational Series, and Randy Dziadowicz, OTC National Coordinator were on hand at both tracks to award the scholarships.  Dave Grueneberg, Madison International Speedway Track Manager and Scott Sauerbrei, Dells Raceway Park Track Manager each participated at their respective tracks.

Students were awarded scholarships ranging from $2,500 to the Track Manager Award of $20,000 at each track.

Vern Fagerberg Jr. of Bloomington, IL received Track Manager Award in which he received at $20,000 scholarship to OTC.  Fagerberg drives in the weekly Late Model division at MIS. “Oh man, I was ecstatic,” Fagerberg said.  “It's great that Dave (Grueneberg, MIS Track Manager) did that and everyone at ASA for helping me out. As we talked many times I wasn't even planning on going to school and now they are basically paying for all of my school and now I am going to be going down there. This leaves extra money for us to come back here to MIS next year and compete with a little bit better car.”

Fagerberg starts classes in October and will be majoring in High Performance & Racing Technology.

Josh Bonick of Boyd, WI received the Track Manager Award at Dells Raceway Park.  He will start classes on October 4th and will be majoring in the Collision Repair with custom paint & graphics program. “I was just shocked that after working hard and going through what I did that I ended up getting it,” Bonick said. “I thought I would be getting a $10,000 scholarship or something. But, I never would have thought that I would have received the $20,000 scholarship.”

Bonick is part of Corey Jankowski's team at Dells Raceway Park. Jankowski is the current point leader in the Late Model division and this week is second overall in the Joe Gibbs Driven Racing Oil ASA Member Track National Championship standings.
