Let the Show Begin
You have seen them in the movie Short Track now you can see them in action at Hickory Motor Speedway. Who you might ask-- the UARA-STARS of course.
The UARA-STARS are preparing for their season opener at Hickory Motor Speedway this weekend. There will be an open practice on Friday the 13th and racing will begin Saturday March 14, 2009.
The best of the best will be at Hickory Motor Speedway to make for some serious racing. They will give the fans all they expect out of short track racing and then some. Familiar faces to Hickory Motor Speedway will be on hand to begin the season. Andy Loden and Coleman Pressley are both going to give the UARA their best for 2009. There will be many new faces in the driver seats as well for 2009 and the STARS will shine brightly once again.
Currently 31 cars pre-entered for the late model event. There will be two past champions showing just what got them there. Matt McCall and Ross Furr will all be trying to set the pace for the on coming new guys. Furr was winner of the 2008 season opener for the UARA and will have his heart set on achieving that goal again.
Jamey Caudill who is a UARA regular and always lurking around the front of the pack will be looking to be a repeat winner at HMS having won the UARA event there in June of 08.
Dale Earnhardt, Jr. has two teams that will blister the track with the UARA-STARS for 2009. Richard Boswell II and Owen Kelly both have the determination and drive to be up front week after week.
Two practice sessions have been run for the UARA-STARS thus far. The testing at Rockingham had Clay Rogers, Kyle Grissom, Alex Yontz, Matt McCall and Matt DiBenedetto as the top five fastest runners. Testing at Bristol had young Paddy Rodenbeck and Brandon McReynolds setting the pace. Rodenbeck and McReynolds have gone through some restructuring on their teams over the winter and it appears they have made good changes. Scott Turlington pulled off a third fastest practice time at Bristol followed by Grissom and Yontz. These young drivers will hit the Hickory Speedway with a vengeance to come out on top.
The Pro Challenge Series will also be running along with the UARA at HMS this weekend.
These smaller cars with their young drivers have as much gusto as the big boys and will put on a great show. The UARA looks forward to having these young guns on board for 10-11 events this year.
The biggest race of the weekend will be the one to beat Mother Nature. The UARA is known to give a mighty fight there and will do everything in their power to have the show go on in a timely manner.
It has been a very busy off-season for the UARA. There will be the flash of a new UARA pace car at the speedways this year. Sam Watts known to many as the KLB Race Car and Parts salesman and the UARA cook will man the pace car for 2009 replacing Harold Crook.
We have two lovely ladies coming on board as pit booth operators and scoring assistants.
Ms. Kathy Hunter (sister to UARA president Kerry Bodenhamer) and Ms. Cheryl Letterman will be the smiling faces to greet the teams for 2009. Also on board will be a new face in the flag stand. Danny Willard will the man behind the flags for 2009. Carl “Chippy” Johnson will be joining the tech squad with quite a bit of experience under his belt. Chippy has helped part-time with the UARA in the past and now comes on board full time.
There will be a change in the control room as well with Ronnie Rice stepping up as the new
Race Director in 2009. Ronnie joined the UARA in 2008 as a tech man and has many years experience with racing.
