Bubba Can Be Beat in Viper Series
Grill WIns on Track, Ruble Wins In Tech, Pollard Finishes Second
Track PR Report
South Alabama Speedway’s Pro Late Model Viper Series came to a close late Saturday night. For the first time this season, somebody other than Bubba Pollard was standing in Victory Lane after the 100 lap race. And after post race inspection, somebody other than the driver that was standing in Victory Lane took home the winner’s trophy.
Augie Grill turned the fastest lap in qualifying, touring the 4/10ths mile oval in 15.588 seconds. Inversion put DJ VanderLey on the pole and Grill on the outside. When the green dropped, Grill got the jump on VanderLey to take the lead in turn one. Scotty Anderson followed Grill by VanderLey to move into second as the field headed down the backstretch. On the outside, VanderLey continued to slide back through the field as Korey Ruble and Bubba Pollard got past.
On lap 10, Ruble moved around Anderson to take over second. Like VanderLey, Anderson began to slide through the field. Pollard and VanderLey got past on lap 13 to move into third and fourth. Up front, Grill and Ruble were running nose to tail. Grill led Ruble, Pollard, VanderLey, and Brandon Odom to the halfway point. With the race going green from lap 37 to lap 75, Grill was able to gain a slight advantage over Ruble. That lead was erased on lap 75 when TJ Reiad spun on the front stretch. However, after the green came back out, Grill again eased away from Ruble.
Grill led Ruble across the stripe by 1.351 seconds and headed to Victory Lane to celebrate. After celebrating, Grill headed to post race inspection. Grill’s car failed the inspection due to a carburetor spacer infraction. The winner’s trophy was passed to Ruble. Pollard, who had already clinched the Viper Series title, finished second. VanderLey was third, followed by Odom and Reiad.
In the Modified Feature, Heath Mills came from the fifth starting spot to take the win.
Jason Singletary got inside of Billy Maxie on a lap 5 restart and went on to win the Roadrunner Feature.
Travis Slawson took the win in the Coyote Feature.
Jack Whittle took the lead on the third lap and went on to win the CupLite Feature.
