It's a New Event and New Track This Week for ASA MW Tour
Elmer Musgrave Memorial 100 Set For This Weekend
By Kevin Ramsell, ASA MW Tour PR Report
After a well deserved break, the American Speed Association Kwik Trip Midwest Tour presented by ECHO Outdoor Power Equipment returns to action this Saturday night at a new venue. The Midwest Super Late Model stars will make their first appearance at Illiana Speedway, an ASA Member Track, for the 8th Annual Elmer Musgrave Memorial 100 presented by Texas Coral Grill & Saloon.

This will be the first time the ASAMT has ventured to the Hoosier state for an event at the half-mile facility located in Schererville, IN. "We are excited to bring an American Speed Association sanctioned touring series event back to Illiana," Steve Einhaus, ASAMT Vice President stated. "This event has become one of the popular Super Late Model events in the Midwest and we are thrilled to be a part of it. Illiana has a great history of hosting American Speed Association and ARTGO events and we cannot wait to have the first ASAMT event in their history books."

The annual event is held in honor of the late Elmer Musgrave, a long-time Chicagoland competitor who passed away at the age of 72 on September 20, 2000. He was a front-runner at the Wilmot (WI) Speedway and the old Waukegan (IL) Speedway where he was the stock car champion in 1952. He also competed in several United States Auto Club (USAC) and Automobile Racing Club of America (ARCA) events. One of his USAC victories came at Illiana in 1963 when he drove his 1963 Mercury to victory. He also won five ARCA events including a 250-mile road course event at the old Meadowdale International Raceway in Carpentersville, IL in 1964.

His two sons have followed in his racing footsteps. Tom, his oldest, competed at many Midwest tracks and ARTGO events. He won back-to-back titles at Grundy County Speedway in 1974 & 75.

Ted, his youngest son, is the 2005 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series Champion. He began racing a late model at Waukegan in 1974 and has competed in many ARTGO and American Speed Association events. He has made a total of 305 career starts in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series where he has four pole awards, 20 top-five and 55 top-ten finishes. He has 142 starts in the Truck Series where he has seven poles, seven wins, 53 top-five and 83 top-ten finishes.

Ted will be attending the event this Saturday night and will be on hand to sign autographs.

The Elmer Musgrave Memorial 100 presented by Texas Coral Grill & Saloon will be the fifth event of the 2009 season for the ASAMT. The first four events have seen three different winners. Nathan Haseleu, the 2006 Musgrave Memorial Champion, currently has a 29-point lead over defending series champion Dan Fredrickson coming into this weekend. There is a three-way tie for third with Tim Schendel, Chris Wimmer, and Steve Carlson as they are only 67 points behind Haseleu.

Only 147 points separate the top-ten in the standings.

Joining the ASAMT on Saturday night will be the Illiana Turbo Stox and Pure Stox. ASAMT ECHO/Oregon Cutting Systems "Quick Cut" Qualifying will get underway at 5:00 p.m. with the popular autograph session at 6:00 p.m. with racing starting at 7:00 p.m.

Advance tickets are available at Buys Off Broadway in Crown Point, IN for $15 for adults (ages 13 and up) and $5 for ages 8-13. The gates open at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday with race day prices of $18 for adults (ages 13-up) and $8 for ages 8-13.

Fans are invited to meet some of the American Speed Association Midwest Tour competitors and be a part of a pre-race party this Friday night at the Texas Corral located at 9200 Indianapolis Blvd, Highland, IN from 7-10 p.m.
