Shangri-La II Motor Speedway Joins With ASA Member Tracks
Half Mile Concrete Oval Gets Ready for '09 Season
ASA PR Report
The excitement is in the air for the new Shangri-La II Motor Speedway in Tioga Center, NY.  The new concrete oval will host its first event on Sunday, May 24th and will be a Level One American Speed Association Member Track with its competitors competing for the Joe Gibbs Driven Racing Oil ASA Member Track National Championship.

The track is still under construction through the watchful eye of track owner George Swansbrough.  In fact, on their track website for his contact info it simply states “NONE He’s too busy building the track!”  But, Amy Stilson the track director states that the message boards are flooded with positive comments about the new track opening, “George and family have been involved in racing for many years now.  George is well known in the racing community and is very excited about owning and operating his own track,” Stilson stated.  “We have received many well wishes from the racing community and they can’t wait for us to open.”

Some of the comments include:

“Standing along the frontstretch, one could feel the history that will be made here, names we have not even heard of yet will go down in racing lore.”

“I hope everyone appreciates the unique opportunity this new facility really is.  At a time when most of the forces of the world are working against racing, we are witnessing a minor miracle, a potentially valuable asset to us all.”

“Can’t wait for the place to open and just want to say thanks so much to George for doing a good thing.”

“For someone in this economy to make this commitment is outstanding and really hard to believe.  Hope for nothing but success.  High quality is a must in the facility, food and the racing.  Word of mouth will be the key to packing the place weekly.  What an opportunity to get it right you have.  Can’t wait!!!”

The new track will be a ½-mile concrete oval with 15 degrees of banking in the corners and 6-7 degrees on the straights.

The excitement of the new facility is not only coming from the fans but from the track employees itself, especially with joining the fast growing American Speed Association Member Track program.  “Being a part of ASA is exciting for us.  We asked for input from some of the drivers and the racing community with regard to becoming a part of ASA.   We received nothing but good comments about ASA,” Stilson stated.  “Although we haven’t officially informed our drivers yet, we feel they will all be as excited as we are about joining ASA and all it has to offer not only us as a track but drivers as well.  Everyone is excited about this track becoming a part of ASA.  We are excited because our drivers will get the best of the best insurance in the industry and the opportunity to become a National Champion and possibly have the opportunity to drive/test for Joe Gibbs.    We look forward to meeting and learning from other ASA Member Tracks.  Although we have been in the oval track racing community for years, we have never owned and operated a speedway.  We have always been behind the wheel and in the grandstands.”

Stilson expanded about their drivers competing for the Joe Gibbs Driven Racing Oil ASA Member Track National Championship, “The Joe Gibbs Driven Racing Oil ASA Member Track National Championship will encourage drivers to join our ASA Sanctioned events and be given the national attention not only on a weekly basis but at the possible opportunity to show their talent to Joe Gibbs.”

Their opening day plans include 100-lap feature events for both the Late Model and Modified divisions.  Their weekly divisions will include Late Models, Modifieds, Sport Modifieds and Street Stocks.

While they will have the new oval, they are also proud of their dragstrip.  Stilson stated they have a busy season at both facilities planned along with a special price for the fans, “We are planning some special races that include the NORA modifieds, Cup Lites and Tobias SpeedSTR’s and a few others are in the works.  We plan on fireworks throughout the season as well.  One of the other items that makes our track interesting is there is also a drag strip on the property right next door to the new speedway.  Our admission will be $10.00 for regular weekly racing and it will include admission to both tracks for one price.  The Drag Strip has been in business for 5 years now and is sanctioned by IHRA and has been a huge success.”

“We are very excited to have Shangri-La II Motor Speedway as part of the ASA Member Track program,” Dennis Huth, ASA President stated.  “The anticipation of their opening is shared not only with the fans in the area but across the United States as we are seeing a positive with a new track opening in an era where we are seeing tracks close.  I commend George Swansbrough and Amy Stilson on what they are doing.”
