For the last few months, there has been one question seemingly heard more often than any other among race fans in Northern New England.
“Will Beech Ridge be ready for the season opening PASS North race?”
The question had to do with an above average amount of snowfall in Maine, the April 19th date for the event and the past history of Beech Ridge's pit and parking areas to flood in the springtime.
The answer to that question has evolved from “there's no way” to “maybe if the right conditions and weather take place” to “probably”.
Well, Speed51.com was in the area of the track late Tuesday and decided to swing by and take a look for ourselves…and to snap a few photos of what we found.
And it appears that the racing will go on without a hitch. We found that the main parking area is dry and freshly graded, the grandstand areas are fine and from what we could see, the pit area and access road are fine. The infield is dry as well. The only areas of concern are part of the pit side parking lot, which is under water; the camping area, which is a little bit soft and muddy and a corner of the pit area that we couldn't see but is known for flooding.
With a positive forecast for the rest of the week in Southern Maine, the conditions only look to get better too. Our verdict is that the grounds won't even be an issue on Saturday.
But don't just take our word for it. As this story was being penned, an official press release came in from PASS addressing the issue with the same findings. Here it is…
Beech Ridge good to go for PASS North opener
Naples ME (April 16, 2008) A welcome string of sunny, warm and breezy spring days have melted away the winters record snowfall and set the stage for a big weekend of Pro All Stars Series (PASS) racing at Beech Ridge Motor Speedway in Scarborough.
According to series President Tom Mayberry, “I met with the Cusacks at Beech Ridge yesterday (Tuesday) and we took a good look at the entire facility. Eighty percent of the pits and parking lots are ready to go today, and the forecast is for great weather right through race day. The Beech Ridge maintenance team is hard at work on the grounds so we're in great shape for our PASS North season opener. There may be snow in your yard and mud in your driveway but we're ready to go racing on Saturday and both practice days are on as scheduled.”
Practice for all PASS and Beech Ridge divisions is set for both Thursday April 17th and Friday April 18th from 2:00 until 7:00 P.M.
On Saturday it's the Cabin Fever 150 for the PASS North super late models and there's a strong field ready to take to the tricky Scarborough oval for the SLM lid lifter.
