Blizzard Races To Add Excitement to Weekly Racing at Five Flags Speedway in ‘08
Super Late Model Series is Alive and Well in Florida
Five Flags Speedway in Pensacola, Florida, might be known more for the annual Snowball Derby, which brings the best Super Late Model teams in the country together every December to do battle against each other. But you don’t have to wait until the end of the racing season to catch some great SLM action at the track.
That is because Five Flags also draws some of the best Southern SLM teams together five other times throughout the season for their Blizzard Series events. That season will get started on April 11th, with events also scheduled for May 23rd, June 27th, August 15th and September 26th.
Fans got to see 54 different drivers compete in the Blizzard Series events last season, with Scott Carlson eventually coming out ahead of Ryan Crane and Justin Drawdy in a close title fight. The Blizzard Series races bring the excitement level up every time that they take place.
“Without a doubt, the Blizzard races are a highlight of our regular season,” said Five Flags Promoter Tim Bryant. “We’ve found that both the competitors and the fans are really pleased with the schedule and enjoy the races each time that they are scheduled.”
This season, the Blizzard Series underwent a few minor scheduling tweaks to keep SLM teams from having to pick and choose too much when it came to planning their races schedules.
“We have five dates without any major conflicts,” said Bryant. “We’ve altered our schedule a little bit this year. The final three Blizzard races are a little bit earlier than they have been in the past. We are doing that to accommodate the Winchester 400 [at Winchester Speedway in Indiana], out of respect for the tradition of that race.
“In the past, there has been a Blizzard race on the same weekend as Winchester, but we want to allow Super Late Model teams from the Southeast to be able to go up and compete in that race, just like what the Northern tracks have always done to allow their teams to come down and run the Snowball Derby.”
And with Super Late Model racing going strong in the South, it looks like there will be plenty of teams competing in Blizzard events this season.
“Along with the resurgence of Birmingham International Raceway, the Viper Series races at Opp and with the Super Late Model races at Mobile, we see that there are plenty of opportunities for the Super Late Model racers to compete. The state of the economy concerns us a little bit because you might think that would hurt the Super Late Model teams, but we’ve seen no indication of that happening at all so far. We see Super Late Model racing as relatively healthy right now.”
