Trackside Now: NASCAR Busch East Series and Whelen Modified Tour at NHIS
Rogelio Lopez and Todd Szegedy On Pole for Big Weekend
Thursday, 1:18pm ET - The first NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour practice session is in the books and Todd Szegedy set quick time.  Eddie Flemke, Jr. was second-quick, while rookie Bobby Grigas III was third-quick.  Ted Christopher was fourth, while James Civali and Andy Seuss rounded out the top-six.  WMT Point Leader and winner of the last WMT race here at New Hampshire, Donny Lia, was eighth fastest.

The NASCAR Busch East Series teams are on the track for their 2.5-hour practice session.

Our friends at ModSeriesScene.com are also here at NHIS and have their forums open for discussion about the Mod Squad throughout the New England 100 weekend.  Check them out here
Thursday, 12:45pm ET - The earth is shaking here in the infield of New Hampshire International Speedway, that can only mean that the Mighty Modifieds are on track for the first-on track activities of Sylvania 300 weekend at New Hampshire International Speedway.  The NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour teams are sharing the short track spotlight with the NASCAR Busch East Series here at the "Magic Mile," as preliminary events of the first race of the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series' Chase for the Championship.

There's a ton of stories that we'll keep you abreast of throughout the weekend, as we've set up camp here in the infield and we'll have our Trackside Now feature throughout the WMT and BES portions of the weekend.  Both series will qualify this afternoon, with the Modifieds taking their two laps in Bud Pole qualifying at 2:50pm, followed by the Busch East teams hitting the track for qualifying at 4:15pm.

Practice sessions for both the Mods and BES cars will rotate throughout the early afternoon.  We'll have updates after each round.

Among some of the stories we're going to be following throughout the weekend are the return of the late Tom Baldwin's #7NY Modified to NHIS with NASCAR star J.J. Yeley behind the wheel.  The car is co-owned by DEI Crew Chief Kevin "Bono" Manion, a Modified guy from New Jersey himself.

Also, there's a bunch of other new names and faces in both the WMT and BES garages.  We'll be following up on all of these stories and a lot more.  For now, here are the entry lists for both the WMT and BES races.

Todd Szegedy set quick time in the first WMT practice.
race, Hirschman will make the field and start at the rear regardless of whether he takes a qualifying lap or not.
Thursday, 2:50pm ET - We're waiting on official NASCAR Timing and Scoring for the NASCAR Busch East Series practice, but unofficially, we're hearing that the Andy Santerre Motorsports teammates Sean Caisse and Jeffrey Earnhardt were the two fastest in practice.  We'll confirm with NASCAR and have a full rundown of times shortly.

The NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour teams are currently on the track for their Bud Pole Qualifying.

Thursday, 2:10pm ET - There's just a little more than a half-hour remaining in the NASCAR Busch East Series practice session.  Jerry Marquis currently is quickest, followed by Matt Kobyluck, Ruben Pardo, Brad Leighton, Mike Olsen and Sean Caisse.

Thursday, 1:43pm ET - Here is the story behind the 7NY here at New Hampshire Int'l Speedway.  Kevin "Bono" Manion, who is the current crew chief for Martin Truex Jr. in the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series, and Gary Putnam, who is car chief for Truex, are the co-owners of this brand new Troyer machine.  It was built in the DEI shops in Mooresville, NC.
Originally, the Manion and Putnam wanted to put Tony Stewart in the car here at Loudon, but because of his "Chase" responsibilities for Joe Gibbs Racing, Tony was unable to do it.  There was some thought to putting former Modified Tour hotshot and former Cup winner Steve Park in the car as well.  That would have made sense because Baldwin and Park are both Long Islanders.  After some discussion, Manion and Putnam decided to ask NEXTEL Cup regular JJ Yeley in the machine.  JJ is a former USAC Triple Crown winner and had always had the desire to compete in a race with the Whelen Modified Tour.

Bono is a former wrench on the Modified Tour with the likes of Steve Park, Jeff Fuller and others.  Putnam is the former crew chief for Charlie Pasteryak.  Both decided to built a Mod and compete with it at NHIS.  Since Bono and Tom Baldwin Jr., crew chief for Dave Blaney on the Cup circuit, were old buddies and roomates, Bono asked his buddy if he could use the paint scheme and number of Tommy's dad, the late great Modified racer Tom Baldwin.

Thursday, 1:30pm ET - There was trouble in the first WMT practice session for the fourth-place finisher from the WMT race here in New Hampshire back in June. Matt Hirschman blew the engine in his #59 machine mid-way through practice. The team is currrently coming
up with a gameplan for a backup engine.  The team does have a spare available and will have it in the car in time for qualifying, but they are contemplating whether or not to even take a qualifying lap later today.  Because every car that's here today will make tomorrow's
JJ Yeley (right) discusses his practice time with Ryan Preece by Yeley's #7NY ride.
Thursday, 3:21pm ET - Andy Santerre is a four-time NASCAR Busch North/East Series Champion as a driver and a three-time winner at New Hampshire International Speedway.  He is proving today that he's not too shabby as a team owner, either.  Santerre's driver Sean Caisse set fast time in practice over ASM teammate and Dale Earnhardt Inc. Development Driver Jeffrey Earnhardt was second-quick in the 2.5-hour practice session today.

While both ASM cars were quick, they put those fast laps down in different fashions.  While the spec engine that was introduced in the BES two years ago has seemingly become the standard for speed on the tour, Caisse's Casella Waste Systems #44 Chevrolet had a built engine under the hood, while Earnhardt's Bass Pro Shops #1 has the spec engine inside.

Jerry Marquis was third-quick, followed by Matt Kobyluck and Chase Austin.  Point leader and winner of the June BES race here at New Hampshire Joey Logano was 14th fastest.

The NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour is on track for their Bud Pole qualifying.  Halfway through, Todd Szegedy is on top of the charts, followed by Ron Yuhas, Donny Lia and Charlie Pasteryak.

Thursday, 5:45pm ET - Rogelio Lopez has put his #03 machine on the pole for tomorrow's NASCAR Busch East Series race. Matt Kobyluck timed second, Sean Caisse, Bryon Chew and Mark McFarland will all start from the top-five.

That wraps up our coverage from NHIS for today.  We'll be back bright and early Friday morning to cover all the action from the NASCAR Busch East Series.  We'll have all kinds of stories from the BES garage, as well as get everyone prepped for Saturday's NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour race.

Thursday, 4:01pm ET - Todd Szegedy proved that his fast time in practice was not a fluke as the Ridgefield, CT native scored the Bud Pole for Saturday's New Hampshire 100 NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour event.  Ron Yuhas, Jr. was second-quick, followed by Donny Lia, Tony Hirschman and JJ Yeley.
