Rain Wins When Mod Tour Goes to Thompson by Denise DuPont
Make-Up Date Changes After a Bit of a Conflict
The second annual Sunoco Thompson Modified Mania Whelen Modified Tour 150 lap event was originally scheduled to run on Sunday, September 9th, 2007.  Mother Nature had different plans though.

Race festivities started with a presentation to the winner of Martinsville Race Awards for the Sunoco Rookie of the Race, Featherlite Most Improved Driver and Powerade Move of the Race Award. Rowan Pennink won all three awards. Upon acceptance of the awards, Pennink announced that he would donate the Rookie of the Race money that he received to John Blewett III Children’s Education Fund.

Donny Lia also received his third pole award for the 2007 race season in the Whelen Modified
division for his time trial results at Thompson

At that point, the drivers and teams worked to prepare for their feature races later that afternoon.
However, rain during the True Value Modified Racing Series feature postponed the action for
nearly two weeks.

Rain started heavy at Thompson about 4:00 PM and all racing activities for the day were
terminated. The race has been tentatively re-scheduled to Saturday September 22nd. An
evening race is planned at the current time.

The new date poses a direct conflict with the 57th Race of Champions at Oswego Speedway
(NY).  Several Tour drivers, including Matt Hirschman and Eric Beers, are expected to enter
that race.  Now they will have a decision to make.

“All I can say on that is that the Race of Champions is a 57 year tradition and to schedule it on
that date and that night at the same time I think is unfair,” said Hirschman.  “I think that it is a
poor decision for modified racing in general. Quite honestly I think that it is b------t.  But right
now I am not going to make any decisions or say anything because in all fairness to the sport
I think that the date should be changed.”

UPDATE – It appears that Hirschman got his wish.  After this story was written and posted,
Thompson International Speedway officials released this statement and date change:

The completion of the Sunoco Modified Mania Program has been set for Sunday, September 23rd.  Rain forced track officials to look for a date that was compatible for all concerned. Following lengthy discussions the day after the rain out, the new race day was set to be the afternoon of Sunday, September 23rd.
Four of the six-divisions in competition for Sunoco Modified Mania were able to complete their events. But, shortly after the True Value Modifieds hit the track, the skies opened, the rains came and everything was brought to a stop. That left the True Value Modifieds and the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour ducking for cover and looking for a date to complete their portion of the Sunoco Modified Mania program.
Grandstands will open at 11:30 AM on Sunday, September 23rd. Racecars from these two divisions will be allowed to practice until 2 PM. The True Value Modified feature event will pick up with two laps complete at 2:15 PM and the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour will run their entire 150-lap main event at about 3:30 PM.
Race fans are urged to hold on to their tickets or pit passes. Both will be honored as rain checks on the 23rd. However, anyone who was not able to attend the original event will be able to purchase a ticket to watch these two exciting touring divisions at a huge discount. Adult tickets will be priced at only $25.00 and any youngsters age 14 and under will be admitted absolutely free. It’s a great family entertainment value and tickets will be available on race day.
The entire day’s schedule may be found on the Thompson Speedway web page which is www.thompsonspeedway.com   Anyone seeking additional information may contact the Thompson International Speedway track office at 860-923-2280.
