The Winchester 400 is one of the most grueling races on equipment in all of short track asphalt racing.  Four-hundred laps around a high-banked, lightning-fast half-mile track like Winchester can take its toll on engines, not to mention on suspensions and body panels.

In order to succeed in a Super Late Model in the Winchester 400, there must be a powerful, yet durable, engine beneath the hood of the car.  A balance of speed and strength will lead to victory lane.

“Right there, that meant a lot to me because we love asphalt racing.  That’s our goal, to keep people racing.  When a fan can see that, that means a lot to us.”

The McGunegill sealed engine helped Ryan Lawler set fast time in qualifying for the Winchester 400 with a track record speed.  Then, in the 400-lap feature, Lawler was able to back up his qualifying effort with a winning performance.  Behind Lawler, second-place finisher Johnny Van Doorn also had a McGunegill power plant beneath the hood.  As did third-place David Stremme, the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series star, who was returning to his short track racing roots in the Winchester 400. 

Both Van Doorn and Stremme joined Lawler on the podium with McGunegill engines beneath the hood, with fourth-place Rick Turner and fifth-place Terry Fisher, Jr., in tow, all with McGunegill power. 
The winning car of Lawler was built by legendary racecar chassis builder Robert Hamke, as was Stremme’s third-place machine.  Both Hamke, as a car builder, and Stremme as a racer, have been around short track racing for years and can have their pick of the litter when it comes to engines.  That’s why both rely on McGunegill engines.

“It means a lot that guys like Robert and David run our engines in their racecars,” added McGunegill.  “It gives us a lot of satisfaction because Robert Hamke is a legend.  David Stremme is an Indiana native, and I have a lot of respect for him.  When David called and questioned about an engine, he had heard good things about it.  I was just excited to know that he wanted to run one of our engines and we are really excited to see him perform well with it.”

The Winchester 400 kicked off a stretch of prestigious Super Late Model year-end events that also includes races such as the Mason-Dixon Meltdown, the All-American 400 and the Snowball Derby.  With a sweep of the top-five finishers in the Winchester 400, McGunegill customers are leading the way into the tough season-ending races throughout the country.
