Hoar Wants to Jump Start Season With Memorial Day T-Road Victory
Five-Time ACT Champ Comes Back Home in 2007
Brian Hoar is looking for a spark to get his stock car racing season on the winning track.
With a pair of top-five finishes in three American-Canadian Tour (ACT) events this season, Hoar is trying to work his way back into the form that won his Goss Dodge team five ACT championships. He wants to set off that magic spark at the Mekkelsen RV Memorial Day Classic at Barre’s Thunder Road this weekend.
race,” Hoar explained. “We have finished well, but it’s been a struggle to get there. A lot of things have changed since we last raced Late Models full-time. The ‘spec’ motor is new to this team, we had never run the Goodyear tires we run now, and none of our race cars have ever had the Koni shocks with the coil-over setup that we run now. It’s all brand new to us.”
Despite his winning record and past success at Thunder Road, Hoar has never been able to score in the 100- lap holiday event. He came within two feet of the win in 1997, but was beaten to the finish line by multi- time “King of the Road” Chuck Beede.
“I’ve been going to the Memorial Day Classic since I was a kid,” said Hoar. “It’s not an ACT Late Model Tour event, but it’s a very important race on the Thunder Road schedule. I need to add a Memorial Day Classic win to my resume.”
Competing in his first full season of ACT-sanctioned Late Model racing since winning his fifth Tour championship in 2000, Hoar is dealing with a steep learning curve this year and sees the Mekkelsen RV Memorial Day Classic as a good place to test under racing conditions. His two ACT top-five finishes this season are a bit misleading, he feels.
“Our cars have been reacting to changes much differently than the cars we used to
The Goss Dodge team has decided to race in selected long-distance events that were not a part of the ACT Late Model Tour schedule in order to learn more about its new race cars. The Mekkelsen RV Memorial Day Classic at Thunder Road is the first stop on the list.
“We went to some pre-season practices to get a feel for the cars,” Hoar continued, “but you aren’t able to make long-distance runs in practice like you would in a real race. Memorial Day is 100 laps, and we’re going to throw everything we’ve got at the car. I want to win the race badly, and we need to set our cars up better for long runs.”
Hoar will face Thunder Road and ACT Late Model Tour veterans this Sunday at “The Nation’s Site of Excitement.” The NAPA Tiger Sportsman, Allen Lumber Street Stock,
and Power Shift Junkyard Warrior divisions will are also on the Mekkelsen RV Memorial Day Classic card. With a pair of top-five finishes in three American-Canadian Tour (ACT) events this season, Hoar is trying to work his way back into the form that won his Goss Dodge team five ACT championships.
