Several notable names had a tough time in qualifying. James Civali will be starting 24th in the Modified World series race. Civali is the 2006 NASCAR Whelen Modified Rookie of the year and is currently fourth in the point standings. Eddie Flemke, Eric Beers, Matt Hirschman and Doug Coby are also all starting outside the top 20.
Mike Stefanik currently leads the points on the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour and will be starting the World Series from the 12th position. Ted Christopher is 104 points behind Stefanik for second in standings and will be starting in third position in the World Series.

It was a picture perfect fall day on Saturday for qualifying at the Thompson International Speedway World Series of Racing. For a while today it looked as though rookie driver Ron Yuhas was going to earn his first NASCAR Whelen Tour Modified Pole. Then Tony Hirschman’s completed his second lap for the fastest lap of the day. This was Tony’s fourth Whelen Modified pole in 2006. Tony now has officially won the Tour’s 2006 Bud Pole Championship.
Ted Christopher, Jerry Marquis and Donny Lia rounded out the top five qualifiers.
When the green flag waves though, it will be Jimmy Blewett leading the field to the green. The driver of the #12 machine redrew the pole position. He will be followed by Marquis, Christopher, Hirschman and Yuhas.
Bobby Grigas III, will be starting his first Whelen Modified tour race at Thompson on Sunday, October 15th. Grigas qualified 17th.
This season Bobby has been running the True Value Modified Racing Series fulltime and is 11th in points and leading ROY candidate. Grigas will be starting the race with a soft black cast on his right hand. The cast is a reminder of a September incident at Canaan Motorsports park that left him on the disabled list for over one month.
